A fun, informative and interactive session focused on practical communication, accessibility and inclusion.

Recently, I delivered a bespoke Deaf Awareness Training session for MKCCG in their gym. The setting made the session especially practical: together, we explored how staff can communicate more confidently with Deaf people and make their fitness environment more welcoming and accessible.
Learning Through Participation

The session was designed to be fun, informative and interactive. Participants learned how to identify and respond to a Deaf patient’s individual communication needs, reduce barriers and make everyday interactions more inclusive. As a Deaf trainer attending with my interpreter, I was also able to bring lived experience directly into the discussion.
Deaf awareness is particularly important in healthcare and public-facing services because communication affects access, choice, safety and inclusion. Practical adjustments, visual communication and respect for individual preferences can help create a more accessible experience.
Bespoke Signs for the Gym

One of the most encouraging moments came when participants asked to learn additional signs for their gym equipment. Because the training can be tailored to a team’s own environment, we were able to focus on the language and situations most relevant to their work. This helped turn general awareness into practical skills that staff can use with Deaf patients and gym users.
What Participants Said
“I very much enjoyed the course. It was very interesting and has given us some great ideas to move forward. 10/10 and very inspiring, wonderful session. Thank you 😊”
“Amazing! Thank you 😊”
“Very enjoyable. I learned a lot.”
Small Changes, Meaningful Impact
The positive feedback showed how valuable practical Deaf awareness training can be. Staff left with new ideas, greater confidence and a clearer understanding of how to meet Deaf people’s needs. Sessions can be adapted for healthcare teams, gyms, community groups and other organisations, ensuring that examples and vocabulary reflect the places where participants work.
