Winter can bring strong winds, heavy rain, freezing temperatures, and sometimes snow. A bit of preparation now can save you time, stress, and money later.

Here are some easy things you can do to get your home and garden, ready for winter.

1. Know what to do if there’s a power cut

If your electricity goes off, don’t panic. You can contact your local Electricity Network Operator by calling 105 – it’s free. They can give you updates and help. Keep a torch, warm clothes, and a charged phone ready just in case. (Unfortunately at time of writing there is no accessible facility for deaf people to make contact)

2. Check your insurance

Even with the best preparation, bad weather can still cause damage.Make sure your home insurance is up to date and covers everything you need – especially for storms or floods.

3. Secure your garden

When strong winds are coming, move or tie down things like garden chairs, tables, trampolines, or plant pots. These can easily blow away and cause damage.

4. Check your roof and fences

Look for loose tiles, slates, or broken fence panels. It’s better to fix them before the weather gets worse. Also, cut off any dead or weak tree branches near your house.

5. Clear your gutters

Make sure your gutters and drainpipes are not blocked with leaves or dirt.If they get blocked, water can leak into your roof or walls.

6. Trim trees and bushes

Cut back big branches before winter starts. This helps stop snow from building up on them and breaking them. It also keeps leaves out of your gutters.

7. Protect your water pipes

Cold weather can freeze and burst pipes.Wrap or cover water pipes in the loft, garage, or outside with pipe lagging (insulation). This keeps the water flowing and can save you money on heating.

8. Check your flood risk

If you live near a river or low-lying area, check if your home is at risk of flooding. You can visit www.gov.uk/check-flood-risk for up-to-date information and advice.

Final Tip

A few small jobs now can make a big difference later.Weatherproof your home and garden, check your insurance, and stay safe this winter.
