This week is Sign Language Week and the theme is Protect BSL. The BSL Bill was passed last March and given Royal Assent by HM Queen Elizabeth II. This is great for the Deaf community but we still have a long way to go before everyday life is accessible. It means we have more rights and power to insist we have the same access to information as a hearing person. Promoting Sign Language Week is important as the more hearing people that are encouraged and inspired to learn will break down communication barriers and prejudice. By encouraging more people to learn helps us, the Deaf community to protect our language and pass on to future generations. Many Deaf schools have closed and Deaf children have been pushed into mainstream education. If BSL becomes part of the curriculum that will also be a positive change.
