Breaking Barriers: Delivering Deaf Awareness Training with Milton Keynes Healthwatch

Today, I had the pleasure of delivering a Deaf Awareness Training session for the team at Milton Keynes Healthwatch (MKHW), accompanied by my fantastic interpreter, Alyson.

This training was particularly meaningful as it built on my longstanding professional relationship with MKHW’s inspiring CEO, Tracy Keech. Together, we share a commitment to inclusivity, fostering understanding, and breaking down communication barriers to create a more accessible world.

A Strong Ally to the Deaf Community

Milton Keynes Healthwatch has consistently demonstrated its dedication to supporting the local Deaf community. Their proactive efforts to engage with and empower Deaf individuals showcase their unwavering commitment to making a meaningful difference. It’s always a pleasure to work with a team that truly understands the value of inclusivity.

About the Training

The session, lasting three hours, was designed to be interactive, engaging, and insightful. Here’s what we covered:

  • Understanding the Barriers Faced by the Deaf Community

Participants learned about the everyday challenges Deaf individuals face and how these barriers can impact communication and accessibility.

  • Practical Communication Tools

We explored strategies for effective communication and how these can be applied in real-world settings to improve interactions with Deaf individuals.

  • Creating an Inclusive Environment

The team gained valuable insights into how they can make their workplace and services more accessible for Deaf people.

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many finding the session both eye-opening and empowering.

Why Deaf Awareness Training Matters

Deaf Awareness Training is about more than just knowledge—it’s about building confidence and fostering meaningful connections. Here’s why businesses and organisations like MKHW benefit from these sessions:

  • Led by a Deaf Person: Gain firsthand insights into the Deaf experience and how we work alongside interpreters.

  • Flexible Delivery Options: Training can be conducted on-site or remotely via Zoom.

  • Customised for Your Needs: Whether it’s a one-to-one session or a group course, we tailor the content to suit your organisation.

  • Practical Takeaways: Receive useful handouts and a certificate of attendance to mark your progress.

With a minimum booking of five participants, our training offers an accessible way to transform your team’s approach to inclusivity.

Building a Brighter Future Together

I’m incredibly proud of the work we accomplished today with Milton Keynes Healthwatch. Every session brings us one step closer to a world where communication barriers are a thing of the past.

If your organisation is ready to embark on its own journey toward inclusivity, I’d love to hear from you. Together, we can create environments where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
